Saggy Jawline Treatments In Oxford, Oxfordshire
One of the most common complaints I hear from my patients is that they don’t like how their jawline has changed with age. It is a change that most of us will experience with age, or even with weight loss. The terms “saggy jawline” or “the w” are what I hear most often during skin consultations, so let’s discover why this happens and what we, at Lumiere MediSpa, can do to help.
Why does the jawline become “saggy” with age?
There are multiple changes in the face that contribute towards a “saggy jawline”. Most often it is the natural loss of volume in both fat and bone that supports the overlying skin. When the supporting volume is lost the skin simply follows gravity in the downward way we all dislike. The photos below show how the skeletal framework to the jawline angle softens and falls away from a thinning face. The facial fat pads can also be seen to change with age.
Much like a balloon that has been inflated for some time, supported by the air on the inside, if you let the air our gradually you will notice the laxity of the balloon as it loses its internal pressure support. The same is for the ageing face; the laxity of the skin becomes loose and moves south with gravity, contributing towards a less defined jawline
Another aspect contributing towards a less defined jawline is that the skin overlying this volume is also changing. Collagen and elastin that provide skin integrity and structure break more easily and are replaced less often in an ageing person. A very thin taught layer within the skin called the SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) also lengthens and weakens, contributing towards skin laxity issues.
What Skin Treatments Are Available For Jawline Tightening?
The good news is there are skin treatments available to help lessen the visual sagging of a jawline.
Dermal Fillers:
Dermal fillers are strategically placed within different layers the face to replace lost facial volume. Some injections will volumise at the bone, such as the corner of the jawline angle or chin, and some will be placed within the subcutaneous or deep fat to replace the fat pads that have depleted.
HIFU (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound):
With volume and structure replaced at a deeper level, HIFU works to tighten any remaining laxity in the skin at the SMAS layer. With targeted internal ablation at this layer, the body is tricked into “healing” mode and with this comes an increased glycoprotein production from fibroblast. In simple terms, it switches on cells to make new collagen fibres, that in turn will cause a new tightening of lax skin.
Hifu treatments create all this without any downtime. Everything is stimulated internally, so you can go about your normal activities after a treatment. Generally you will require 3 treatments, 3 months apart with results last up to 2 years.
